Rent-ECO-cutlery: dinnerware on hire supports the eco-economy
House parties are the best thing ever! Birthday bashes, housewarming, pooja, kitty party, celebratory occasions—people who love to entertain cannot have enough of them.
The sad reality is that sometimes a house party can generate more waste than a single household’s entire month’s worth of garbage because of use of disposable thermocol/plastic dinnerware - plates, cups, glasses, spoons.
Lots of environment lovers don’t want to use these disposable tableware and generate waste, but there wasn’t any suitable alternative either. The amount of waste generated by a single house party in our city is often equivalent to a month’s waste from the same household.
The traditional way of using steel cutlery from cutlery banks was an option, but people were concerned with the poor standards of hygiene, washing and transportation.
A Pimpri-Chinchwad city couple Ganesh Bora and Reshma Bora have contemplated long on the primary hurdles which prevent people from using steel cutlery.
Ganesh Bora said, “We had a brainwave – why not make dinnerware available for parties on rent? This simple idea could prevent loads of garbage from reaching landfills and harming the environment; it was also a contribution to the Swachh Bharat Mission.”
"After a lot of brainstorming, we came up with a sustainable solution - “Rent-ECO-Cutlery” startup, which helps to make parties ecofriendly by providing an alternative to disposable dinnerware on hire by overcoming problems in traditional methods", added Reshma Bora.
Rent-ECO-Cutlery startup has started providing steel cutlery - plates, tumblers, spoons, compartment dishes, and cotton napkin - on rental basis in the Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune area. A specialty of this service is that it provides home-to-home delivery of cutlery and also offers washing of plates alongside. All that customers have to do is give them a call a couple of hours before their party, and clean, hygienic and sparkling dishes are delivered to them in time for their party. After the party, customers need not bother about washing plates; they can just remove the leftovers and keep the dishes aside. Rent-ECO-Cutlery team will pick up the dinnerware as is and manage the washing on their own premises.
Rent-ECO-Cutlery is a self-sustainable business model adding value to Swachh Bharat. Through the washing service Rent-ECO-Cutlery provides employment to underprivileged women. The startup launched on 1st January 2019 and in one year it saved over 40 thousand disposable pieces of tableware from polluting the landfill.
There are also biodegradable areca plates available as an alternative to plastic thermocol plates but these are expensive; also energy, water required to manufacture them is very high. Also degradation time required for these plates is more than 180 days.
Overall, steel tableware provided by Rent-ECO-Cutlery is a pocket-friendly and environment-friendly option. The startup is also working towards using ecofriendly bio-enzymes that require less water for washing utensils.
